Leo's Great Adventure

Leo is a brave explorer. When he was young, he could run very fast and climb tall trees. He used to explore small valleys near his home, but now he wants a big adventure. He packs his sleeping bag, a torch, and a compass in his backpack.

His journey begins early in the morning. He walks through a beautiful green meadow full of flowers. "How far is it from the meadow to the big mountain?" he asks himself. He checks his map. It is 10 kilometres away. He crosses a clear stream and fills his water bottle.

Soon, the path becomes difficult. He sees a dark cave and a dangerous swamp. He stays away from the swamp because the water is dirty. He hears a loud noise and finds a huge waterfall. The water falls for 300 metres before it reaches the bottom!

Finally, he reaches a massive rock wall. As my readers know, I love the exciting sport of rock climbing. There is nothing like the feeling of standing on a tall cliff and looking at the world below. But have you ever wondered how these massive rock walls were made? Cliffs are created by three main natural forces. First, water and waves constantly hit rocks at the edge of the sea, wearing them away over time. Second, tectonic plates inside the earth can push land upward or pull it apart during earthquakes. Finally, glaciers—huge rivers of ice—slowly move against rocks, cutting deep into them over thousands of years.

Leo looks beyond the cliff and sees a dormant volcano. "How long does it take to climb that volcano?" he wonders. "It takes a whole day!" Maybe that will be his next great adventure.
